NSW Treasurer welcomes Draft Report on Federal Financial Relations

2 Jul 2020

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has welcomed the Draft Report of the NSW Review of Federal Financial Relations – an independent review chaired by David Thodey AO, which was launched at a lunch at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday, 1 July.

In launching the Draft Report, Mr Perrottet thanked David and the other panel members for the work they have put into the Review to help lay the foundations for a better federation and stronger NSW.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the case for change all the more urgent, while demonstrating that our federation is strongest when states step up and lead.

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson speaks at the National Press Club event.

The NSW Government is focussed on reducing the overall tax burden on people, and we now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change federation for the better, and it will be crucial for states like NSW to continue to show leadership and drive the federal reform agenda, in conjunction with the Commonwealth.

While the Draft Report reflects the panel’s draft recommendations, not government policy, it gives our nation a clear agenda for the reform conversation we have to have.

The NSW Government will consider the Draft Report carefully while we await the final version later this year.No Government decisions about reform are expected to be made until after that date, and following further engagement and consultation with the people of NSW.
