Cheltenham Girls’ High School has been chosen to tour battlefields in Europe and Asia as part of the 2020 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship.
Member for Epping Dominic Perrottet said 20 high schools from around NSW were drawn from a ballot.
History students interested in attending the tour will need to submit a piece of work that relates to the topic of Australians at War from the syllabus.
“I encourage students in Year 9 and 10, who will be studying History next year, to apply for this amazing opportunity to represent Cheltenham Girls, their community and their State,” Mr Perrottet said.
“Essays, short stories, video presentations and artworks are just some of the formats in which you can submit your application.
“Three finalists from each school will be submitted to the Office for Veterans Affairs for the final selection process with one student per school awarded a place on the tour.”
Cheltenham Girls’ High School Principal Suellen Lawrence said the scholarship would be fantastic opportunity for students to live and breathe the history they were studying.
“This is a wonderful scholarship that will enable students to immerse themselves in the history of Australia’s involvement in war,” Mrs Lawrence said.
“It will be an incredibly memorable learning opportunity for the fortunate girl selected.”
Acting Minister for Veterans Geoff Lee said the 2020 tour would see students visit significant sites and battlegrounds in Greece and Singapore.
“The lucky winners will deepen their understanding of the changing scope and nature of warfare and commemorate the service of Australians in both the First and Second World Wars,” Mr Lee said.
“The successful student will meet other scholars from all over NSW and will share in a unique educational experience.”
The tour will give students important insights into Australia’s involvement in the world wars and the experiences of the men and women who were involved in those conflicts.
