Work Complete Three Months Early On Overtaking Lane Near Bilpin

19 Oct 2016

Member for Hawkesbury Dominic Perrottet today announced the new 1.2 kilometre westbound overtaking lane east of Bilpin will open to traffic by the end of the week.

Mr Perrottet said the overtaking lane has been built as part of the NSW Government’s $48 million Bells Line of Road Corridor Improvement program, aimed at improving safety and travel times along the key corridor.

“Bells Line of Road provides a vital connection for motorists including heavy vehicles between northwest Sydney and the state’s west including Lithgow,” Mr Perrottet said.

“As the road winds through the Blue Mountains National Park there are limited overtaking opportunities and safe places for road users to pass slower moving vehicles.”

“A new overtaking lane has been built for westbound motorists east of Bilpin and will open to traffic this week, three months ahead of schedule.”

“This is great news for the thousands of motorists travelling this corridor daily.”

Mr Perrottet said work is also nearing completion on a 1.4 kilometre section of road about 800 metres north of Pierces Pass turn off.

“The road lanes are being widened to improve safety for motorists travelling through the winding section of road.”

“A central painted median will be installed to help prevent head on collisions and a high friction surface installed to improve traction.”

“Work is also expected to be complete in coming weeks on the one kilometre eastbound overtaking lane east of Bilpin.”

The work follows the completion of work at two crash cluster sites east of Bell in 2015, a westbound overtaking lane near Berambing this year and two overtaking lanes east of Bilpin in 2015.
